Should you buy a car now, or wait for the government to sort out this ethanol mess?
Short answer, buy the car. Don't wait.
Here's why.
E20 fuel, petrol with 20% ethanol, became mandatory across India from April this year.
Then in June, the Attorney General told the Supreme Court it's still an "ongoing experiment," with results only assessed by 2027.
Wild thing to say about a fuel that's already in every pump.
But that's the point. It's not proposed anymore. It's not under review. It's already live everywhere.
Waiting for "clarity" doesn't change what's coming out of the nozzle today.
So the real question isn't the policy. It's whether your car can handle the fuel that's already here.
And that's simple. Almost every car made from 2023 onward is E20 compatible. Manufacturers had years to prep for this.
Buy new today, you're covered by default.
The real pain is with older cars. Pre-2023 engines might see a mileage drop, some extra wear over time. That's a used-car problem, not a new-car problem.
So don't hold off a purchase over this. A rollback to E10 isn't happening anytime soon, given how much the government's invested in it.
Waiting just means paying more at the pump on your current car, while the one you want sits in a showroom.
One tip, if you're eyeing an older model or leftover stock, just confirm with the dealer it's E20 compliant. Two-minute check.
For anything current gen though, this isn't a reason to delay.
Bottom line don't let a Supreme Court soundbite talk you out of a car you were already planning to buy.
