The BYD Sealion 7 Is Genuinely Good. So Why Does It Still Feel Like a Hard Sell?

if you've spent any time on car forums lately, you've probably seen someone gush about the BYD Sealion 7. And honestly? The gushing is fair. This is a properly quick, properly loaded electric SUV-coupe that undercuts a lot of what Mercedes and BMW are charging for their EVs, while out-speccing most of them on paper.

Numbers, quickly: 82.56kWh battery, a claimed range north of 560km, 0-100 in as little as 4.5 seconds on the Performance trim, and DC fast charging that gets you from 10 to 80% in under half an hour. That's not "good for the price." That's just good, full stop.

And yet. Every time BYD India makes headlines, it's not really about the car. It's about price hikes (there have been a few since launch), or showroom expansion numbers, or some geopolitical headline sitting right next to the car review. The Sealion 7 keeps getting talked about as a proxy for something bigger than itself.

The elephant in the showroom

Let's just say it plainly: buying a Chinese EV in India in 2026 isn't the same decision as buying a Hyundai or a Kia, even though on paper it should be. There's a trust gap that has nothing to do with the product and everything to do with where it's built and who's building it. Some of that caution is fair — India-China relations aren't exactly warm, and there are real questions about long-term parts supply, software updates, and whether a brand stays committed if things get politically messy. Some of it is just vibes and headlines bleeding into car-buying decisions, which, fair or not, is how people actually shop.

BYD hasn't made this easier for itself either. Multiple price increases within the same year, even if each one is "only" fifty grand or so, chip away at the confidence of anyone who bought early and now feels like they overpaid. It's a small thing, but it adds up to a brand that still feels like it's finding its footing here rather than one that's settled in for the long haul.

But the ownership experience is quietly getting better

Here's what doesn't get enough credit: BYD has actually been expanding fast. We're talking dozens of showrooms across dozens of cities now, which for a brand that basically started from zero in India a couple of years ago is not nothing. The Blade Battery tech BYD uses is also genuinely well-suited to Indian heat — LFP chemistry doesn't degrade or catch fire nearly as easily as the older lithium-ion packs, which matters a lot more here than it does in, say, Norway.

So the infrastructure argument against Chinese EVs — "sure it's cheap but who'll service it" — is getting weaker by the month. It's not fully gone. But it's weaker.

Should you actually buy one?

If you're cross-shopping the Sealion 7 against something like a Volvo EX40 or waiting on the Mercedes GLC EV, and price-to-spec is your main filter, the Sealion 7 wins that fight without breaking a sweat. It's faster, it's got more range on paper, and it's already sold over 2,000 units in India, so it's not some mystery import nobody's tested.

But if resale value, long-term brand confidence, and "will this company still be here selling parts in 2032" matter more to you than raw numbers — and for a lot of Indian buyers, they genuinely do — the hesitation isn't irrational. It's just a different kind of math.

The Chinese EV push into India isn't going to be decided by any one car. It's going to be decided by whether brands like BYD can turn "impressive spec sheet" into "boring, reliable ownership experience" over the next few years. The Sealion 7 has already won the first argument. The second one is still being written.
